Adult and adolescent Autism Assessment in Thunder Bay

Thoughtful, affirming assessments for adults who have spent years feeling different, misunderstood, or overlooked

If you’ve been wondering whether you might be autistic, you’re not alone.

Many adults begin exploring autism after years of feeling out of step with others, working hard to “fit in,” or being misunderstood in relationships, school, or work. Some have been previously diagnosed with anxiety, depression, or personality-related concerns, without feeling fully understood.

At Affirming Mental Health Services, we provide comprehensive autism assessments for adults in Thunder Bay, with a focus on clarity, respect, and neurodiversity-affirming care.

What Autism Can Look Like in Adults

Autism in adults is often missed, especially in people who have learned to mask or adapt over time.

You might notice:

  • Feeling like you have to consciously “perform” or monitor yourself in social situations
  • Exhaustion or burnout after social interaction
  • Difficulty understanding unspoken social expectations
  • Strong preferences for routine, predictability, or structure
  • Deep focus on specific interests
  • Sensory sensitivities (noise, light, textures, etc.)
  • A long-standing sense of being “different,” even if you can’t fully explain why

Many of our clients have spent years questioning themselves before considering autism as a possibility.

Why Get an Autism Assessment?

An autism assessment is not about labeling you. It is about understanding how your brain works.

A formal assessment can provide:

  • Clarity about whether autism is part of your experience
  • Language to better understand yourself and your needs
  • Validation for experiences that may have been dismissed or misunderstood
  • Personalized recommendations for work, relationships, and daily life
  • Documentation that may support accommodations if needed

For many people, this process brings a sense of relief and self-understanding.

Our Approach: Neurodiversity-Affirming and Respectful

We approach autism assessment from a neurodiversity-affirming perspective.

That means:

  • We do not view autism as something to be “fixed”
  • We recognize the role of masking, especially in adults
  • We consider cultural, gender, and identity-based influences
  • We take time to understand your lived experience, not just test results

We are explicitly 2SLGBTQIA+ affirming, and we understand that many autistic individuals have experienced invalidation in healthcare, education, or family systems.

You will be taken seriously here.

What to Expect

 Step 1: Intake Appointment ($200)

This is a detailed clinical interview covering your developmental history, current experiences, and goals.

Step 2: Testing Sessions ($400-$800 each)

We use standardized psychological measures  and structures interviews to assess social communication, cognitive patterns, and related areas.

Step 3: Feedback Session

You’ll receive a clear explanation of your results, along with personalized recommendations.

A written report is provided following your assessment.

Late Identified Autism

Many adults seeking assessment were not identified in childhood.

This is especially common for:

  • Individuals who were seen as “quiet,” “gifted,” or “anxious”
  • People who learned to mask or adapt socially
  • Women, nonbinary individuals, and others whose presentations may not match outdated stereotypes

If you’ve been missed before, that does not mean your experiences are not valid.

Autism, ADHD, and Overlap

There is significant overlap between autism and ADHD.

Some individuals have one, some have both, and others are exploring which framework best fits their experiences.

If you are unsure, we can help guide that process.
